He was accepted into the New York University Grossman School of Medicine and graduated with a degree in medicine in 1981. He completed an internship and residency at New York University from 1981 to 1988, followed by a fellowship in academic psychiatry in 1989. He maintains a medical license in New York and board certification through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
