Chicago dentist reflects on three decades of changing technology, complex patient care, and the evolution of dental implant treatment.

Atcha began practising in Chicago in 1996 after earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. Over the three decades since, his work has become increasingly focused on dental implants and patients with complex needs, including those with multiple missing or failing teeth.
"Thirty years gives you a very different perspective on dentistry," Atcha said. "The technology has changed, the options available to patients have expanded, and people are much more informed. What has not changed is the importance of careful planning and understanding what each patient needs."
The anniversary also reflects a career that began with science before moving into clinical dentistry.
Atcha earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois in 1991. During dental school, he received first-place recognition for a table clinic presentation involving biochemistry research, an early experience that helped shape his interest in combining science with practical patient care.
"Science taught me to look closely at why something works, not just whether it works," he said. "That mindset has stayed with me throughout my career."
Three Decades of Change in Implant Dentistry
When Atcha entered practice in the mid-1990s, implant dentistry was a much different field than it is today. Over the following decades, developments in imaging, treatment planning, materials, and implant techniques expanded the ways dentists could approach missing teeth and full-mouth rehabilitation.
Atcha's work evolved alongside those changes.
His clinical focus has included same-day dental implants, implant-supported dentures, full-arch rehabilitation, All-on-4 dental implants, and treatment planning for patients with more complicated dental conditions.
For Atcha, one of the most significant shifts has been the ability to evaluate complex cases as a complete system rather than treating each dental problem on its own.
"When you are dealing with a complex case, you have to think beyond one tooth," he said. "You have to consider function, healing, bone support, the bite, and how the treatment will work over the long term."
That long-term view has become a central part of his approach to implant care.
Continued Education Through a Changing Field
Atcha continued his professional education as his focus on implant dentistry deepened. He earned Fellowship and Diplomate recognition through the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the International Dental Implant Association.
He also received first-place recognition for a table clinic presentation at an international dental implant meeting.
According to Atcha, continuing education has become increasingly important as new tools and treatment methods enter the field.
"You cannot rely only on what you learned when you graduated," he said. "Dentistry keeps evolving. Experience matters, but so does staying open to new research, better planning methods, and new ways of approaching difficult cases."
A Chicago Career Reaches a Milestone
The 30th anniversary also brings Atcha back to where his interest in healthcare first began.
He grew up in Chicago around family mentors in medicine and dental medicine, an experience he credits with influencing his decision to enter healthcare.
"Growing up in Chicago and coming from a family of mentors in medicine and dental medicine shaped and moulded my mindset to go into healthcare and heal people," Atcha said.
Three decades later, he continues to practise in the same city where that interest first developed.
Beyond his clinical career, Atcha has received recognition through Marquis Who's Who and Fortune-related coverage. His charitable interests have included Susan G. Komen and Room to Read, while his personal interests include running, fitness, and travel.
For Atcha, however, the 30-year milestone is less about looking back than recognising how much the profession continues to change.
"There is always more to learn," he said. "Thirty years in practice gives you experience, but it also teaches you to keep asking questions and keep improving."
