Fort Worth, TX, Sept. 17, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Student support has long been built around one assumption: when students need help, they will ask for it.

Many never do.

Some college students are struggling quietly but do not believe what they are experiencing is serious enough for “help.” Others want to sleep better, find motivation, manage stress, focus before an exam, navigate relationships or simply feel more like themselves. For this quiet majority, traditional care systems often offer no clear starting point.

That’s why TimelyCare today unveiled Connected Care for Every Student, a new model that reaches students early with a conversational AI-powered front door, then connects them to human support, licensed clinical care, or crisis intervention when the conversation calls for it.

The model marks a shift from student access to activation: helping students take the first step before challenges grow more acute. It combines proactive engagement, a clinician-designed AI-powered well-being guide, on-demand human support, coaching, counseling, psychiatry, medical care and crisis support in one connected system built for higher education.

TimelyCare’s acquisition of youth well-being company Alongside made this model possible, bringing safe, clinically informed AI capabilities into TimelyCare’s scaled human, clinical and safety infrastructure. The result is an easier first step for students and a more connected path to the right level of care as needs evolve.

Closing the activation gap

Colleges and universities have expanded counseling, wellness and student-support services, but availability alone does not ensure students will use them.
A forthcoming national study of more than 1,500 students from TimelyCare and College Pulse examines the activation gap: the distance between support being available and students actually taking the first step to use it.
New findings include:
68% of college and university students said they told someone they were “fine” when they were not in the past 30 days.
• 83% said a low-pressure first step would help them determine whether they need to talk to someone.
• 79% said they would choose a well-being resource available immediately over one officially recommended by their school.

The research reinforces a central challenge for higher education: reaching students earlier requires a frictionless first step for students who are not in crisis but also not fully okay.

“Most students who are struggling don't announce it. They tell you they're fine," said Luke Hejl, CEO and Co-Founder of TimelyCare. "We've spent years building student support around the ones who ask. This connected model is built for the ones who don't and designed so that getting more support is never a separate decision, a separate login, or a separate system.”

An easier front door, with humans in the loop

The AI-powered well-being guide in the new model helps students navigate everyday concerns such as stress, sleep, motivation, academic pressure, relationships, confidence and belonging, privately and at their own pace. It provides practical, skills-based guidance without requiring students to make an appointment or decide whether their concern warrants clinical care.

When a conversation indicates that human support may help, it can connect the student with the appropriate resource. The system is designed to identify a potential crisis, flag it for intervention and route the student to immediate human support.

Unlike a standalone AI well-being tool, the Connected Care For Every Student model directly integrates TimelyCare’s human, clinical and safety infrastructure. Students can move into on-demand human support, coaching, counseling, psychiatry, medical care, crisis support or appropriate campus resources as their needs change.

“The goal is to use AI as another entry point to care, not a replacement for people, so more students can get support earlier and connect with human care when needed,” said Hejl.

The AI-enabled experience is clinician-designed with a safety governance process backed by four years of extensive testing and reviewed by clinicians and AI experts. The system is built to recognize urgent needs and connect students to trained human support through clear, clinically governed pathways to care.

This combination of clinical expertise, extensive testing, and human oversight helps close the activation gap by reaching students earlier with appropriate support, not only after they actively seek clinical care.

By integrating AI-powered guidance with seamless human intervention, this model fosters well-being from a student’s first step to graduation. Ultimately, tackling everyday challenges early boosts mental health and a sense of belonging, key drivers of improved student persistence and retention.

Connected Care for Every Student
is built on four connected layers: proactive engagement that reaches the full student population and surfaces needs early; an AI-enabled wellbeing guide for everyday struggles that never reach a counseling center; on-demand human support and coaching; and licensed clinical care. Proactive engagement is available to colleges and universities today; the AI-enabled well-being guide will be available in late fall 2026.
TimelyCare and College Pulse will release findings from the new national study on what motivates students to take the first step toward managing their well-being at the TimelyCare Summit: Every Student Forward, a virtual event on October 22, 2026.
