The latest guide comes as interest in gold as a long-term investment remains notable among U.S. adults. According to a Gallup survey conducted in May 2025, 23% of respondents named gold as the best choice for a long-term investment, placing it among the investment categories tracked in the poll.
Gold also plays a role in retirement planning as an asset considered for diversification and as a potential hedge against inflation and currency fluctuations. Physical gold provides an alternative to assets tied to individual companies, while Traditional and Roth Gold IRAs retain their applicable tax treatments.
Gold IRA Companies Bulletin notes that Augusta Precious Metals, founded in 2011, assists customers with self-directed IRAs holding physical gold and silver and requires a $50,000 minimum for IRA and cash purchases. Goldco, also founded in 2011, focuses on rollovers and transfers into Gold IRAs and generally requires a $25,000 minimum to open a Gold IRA, while cash purchases of gold coins have no stated minimum.
The publication notes that Augusta and Goldco have different fee structures. Augusta charges a one-time $50 setup fee, $125 annually for custodial services, and a $100 annual storage fee, with waivers possible for larger balances. Goldco’s fees include a $50 setup charge, an annual administration fee, and storage costs of $100 to $150 based on storage type. Most new investors can expect first-year fees to range from $275 to $325.
Beyond company-specific costs, the guide highlights considerations that apply to any Gold IRA investor. IRA-held metals must be stored with an approved custodian or depository rather than kept at home, while gold does not produce dividend or interest income. For 2026, the IRA contribution limit is $7,500, rising to $8,600 for those age 50 or older.
