The award will be presented at CENIC’s biennial conference “The Right Connection” to be held from March 31–April 1, 2026 in Monterey, CA.

Professor Newman’s team includes Preeti Bhat, Tom Hutton, John Graham, and Mohammad Sada. The award will be presented at CENIC’s biennial conference “The Right Connection” to be held from March 31–April 1, 2026 in Monterey, CA.

The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) is pleased to announce that Frank Wuerthwein, Executive Director of UC San Diego’s San Diego Supercomputer Center and his team will be recognized with the 2026 CENIC AIR Award for Innovative Technical Design & Instructional Support. The award will be presented at CENIC’s biennial conference “The Right Connection” to be held from March 31–April 1, 2026 in Monterey, CA.

In 2014, California’s Public Libraries embarked on a remarkable journey, joining the vast majority of California’s public schools, colleges, and universities as members of CENIC, with the vision of bringing robust, high-speed broadband to all Californians. By connecting to the California Research and Education Network (CalREN), public libraries gained access to a world-class network built for California’s leading research universities and positioned libraries as critical digital lifelines for the communities they serve. Today, nearly 1000 of the state’s 1127 libraries connect to CalREN thanks to ongoing support from the State of California and the sustained leadership of the State Librarian, Greg Lucas, and Governor Gavin Newsom, whose collaboration with CENIC ensures that library patrons, whether in urban centers or rural communities, have access to reliable, high-capacity Internet – a service that has become a fundamental and necessary utility in the 21st century.

San Diego State University (SDSU) recently announced that it would become the first CENIC member—and the first research institution in the world—to enjoy a native 800 Gigabit per second (Gbps) connection to a high-performance research and education network, the network being of course CENIC’s California Research and Education Network (CalREN). That connection is now active, and CENIC anticipates further interest from other member institutions.

CENIC is delighted to announce Dr. Samuel Sudhakar as our next CENIC Board Chair, succeeding the current Chair, Sylvie Cosgrove, as of 15 February 2024.

CENIC is pleased to present the 2024 Innovations in Networking Award for Equitable Access to Cyberinfrastructure to the Technology Infrastructure for Data Exploration (TIDE) Project. TIDE is a partnership between San Diego State University and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), and it extends the CENIC AI Resource (CENIC-AIR), the California portion of the National Research Platform, beyond SDSU to three additional CSU campuses: CSU San Bernardino, Cal Poly Humboldt, and CSU Stanislaus. The CENIC Innovations in Networking Awards recognize exemplary people, projects, and organizations that leverage high-bandwidth networking.

UC San Diego’s ALERTCalifornia, in collaboration with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and industry partner DigitalPath have been selected to receive CENIC’s 2024 Innovations in Networking Award for Public Safety. UC San Diego’s İlkay Altıntaş, Chief Data Science Officer of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and Founding Fellow of the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute, has been selected to receive CENIC’s 2024 Christine Haska Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her visionary and foundational contributions to the field of data science, a domain that has become an indispensable pillar in a multitude of research areas today and promises to be even more so in the future. CENIC is pleased to award the 2024 Innovations in Networking Award for Network-Enabled Cloud Applications: Education and Administration to the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD)'s project to move their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) to the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). This award is made in recognition of the SDCCD’s modernization and optimization of its educational and administrative services, thus ensuring a more efficient, scalable, and secure management of resources. The High Performance Computing Program (HPCP) at CSU San Bernardino has been selected to receive the CENIC 2024 Innovations in Networking Award for Research Applications in recognition of its work supporting faculty who wish to avail themselves of all the National Research Platform (NRP) has to offer. The CENIC Innovations in Networking Awards recognize exemplary people, projects, and organizations that leverage high-bandwidth networking.

CENIC is pleased to present the 2024 Innovations in Award for Broadband Applications to the Tribal Broadband Bootcamp in recognition of its success in fostering a network of Indigenous people working across Tribal lands to build broadband networks and develop best practices ensuring communities have high-quality Internet access. In recognition of work to reshape archeological studies, the Scripps Center for Marine Archaeology at UC San Diego and the Leon Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies at the University of Haifa in Israel are being awarded the 2021 CENIC Innovations in Networking Award for Research Applications.

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub (CZ Biohub) has joined CENIC’s California Research and Education Network (CalREN), a high-speed, high-capacity broadband computing network that connects 20 million users from the vast majority of research and academic institutions across California.
