Equinor today broke ground on construction at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT), kicking off the revitalization of the venerable port facility into a hub for offshore wind on the East Coast and a critical contributor to New York’s renewable energy ambitions.

Equinor today announced the execution of the Purchase and Sale Agreement (PSA) with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) for the renewable power generated by the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project. Empire Wind and the Building & Construction Trades Council of Greater New York and Vicinity (BCTC) today announced the signing of a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) for the construction of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT). The revitalized SBMT will play a key role in Equinor’s development of the Empire Wind offshore wind project as a staging and assembly site and as a home for the project’s operations and maintenance base.

The Offshore Wind Innovation Hub today announced the first round of start-up companies selected to receive support to develop innovative ideas designed to unleash the potential of offshore wind. The six winners–chosen from a panel of eleven finalists participating in a live “shark tank” style pitch competition last month–will begin a six-month mentoring and business development program designed to prepare them to partner with major offshore wind developers, suppliers, and the larger offshore wind value chain.

The Offshore Wind Innovation Hub—a New York-based initiative to foster new developments in offshore wind technology by start-ups and innovation experts—is holding a live “showdown” event for finalists hoping to join the Innovation Hub Accelerator Program. Innovators will pitch their development concepts to a jury comprised of offshore wind experts before a live audience at Housing Works Bookstore in Manhattan.

Equinor and bp have announced that Skanska USA has been chosen as the Construction Manager for the port upgrade of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT). A transformative project in Southwest Brooklyn, the SBMT site will build upon its decades-long history as a staple of Brooklyn’s working waterfront by becoming an industry-leading offshore wind port for the Empire Wind and Beacon Wind projects, which are being developed off the coast of Long Island through a 50-50 partnership between Equinor and bp. Skanska’s initial involvement will be to provide pre-construction services.

The Offshore Wind Innovation Hub (OWIH) is open for business and announced its first call for applications. The Brooklyn-based Hub was founded in mid-2022 to identify and help develop promising start-ups to drive new innovations in the offshore wind industry. The three-year initiative is backed by Equinor and bp, partners developing the Empire Wind and Beacon Wind offshore wind projects, together with Urban Future Lab (UFL), the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and the National Offshore Wind Research & Development Consortium (NOWRDC) and is supported by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC).

Equinor and partner bp launched the first of three Industry Supplier Expos with an inaugural event in the Capitol Region at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC), in Troy New York, yesterday. More than 80 manufacturers attended the expo which is designed to help local and regional manufacturers participate in New York’s new offshore wind industry and connect them directly with Equinor and its key suppliers. The event was also attended by Assemblyman John McDonald from the 108th District and Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy from the 109th District.

As provisional winner of a lease area on the Outer Continental Shelf off California, Equinor continues to lead the way in growing the US’ offshore wind industry.

Equinor and bp, will kick-off a three-part Industry Supplier roadshow with an inaugural event in the Capitol Region at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC), in Troy New York, on December 13, beginning with registration at 8:00 AM. Equinor, together with its partner bp, today announced the launch of a New York-based Offshore Wind Innovation Hub that will facilitate partnerships with start-ups that bring new technological solutions to the rapidly growing US offshore wind industry. The initiative springs from a new three-year partnership between Equinor, the Urban Future Lab (UFL) at the NY Tandon School of Engineering, and the National Offshore Wind R&D Consortium (NOWRDC), supported by New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC).

Empire Offshore Wind, a joint venture between Equinor and bp, has awarded a long-term service operations vessel charter agreement to US marine transportation provider, Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO). The plug-in hybrid service operations vessel (SOV) will be the first in the US offshore wind sector capable of sailing partly on battery power.

Today, at an event with U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and U.S. Representative Paul Tonko, Equinor and bp announced the finalization of the Purchase and Sale Agreements (PSAs) with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), for Empire Wind 2 and Beacon Wind 1.  The PSAs set the terms under which these projects will supply homegrown, renewable power to New York and inject significant economic investments into the state’s economy.

Equinor today announced the opening of the New York offshore wind project office, located in Sunset Park’s Industry City neighborhood adjacent to the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. The project office will serve as the hub for Equinor and bp’s large-scale offshore wind operations in the region, including Empire Wind and Beacon Wind. Together, Empire Wind 1 and 2 and Beacon Wind 1 are poised to provide 3.3 gigawatts of renewable power to New York, enough to power approximately 2 million homes.
